Discovering Passions and New Skills: Dean’s Journey at West Virginia Virtual Academy
Meet Dean, a tenth-grade student at West Virginia Virtual Academy (WVVA) who is crafting a unique path to his future. Not only is Dean balancing virtual high school coursework, but he’s also diving into hands-on learning at Mercer County Technical Education Center, where he’s exploring his passion for baking and pastry. Dean’s story highlights how WVVA’s flexible approach empowers students to follow their interests while building valuable life skills.
Dean first joined virtual learning during the pandemic and found that the supportive environment at WVVA made it a perfect fit. Virtual schooling helped him thrive, offering both the structure he needed and the flexibility he wanted. “I like that it’s easy and simple,” Dean shared, reflecting on the accessible, supportive nature of WVVA’s online setup. He also emphasized how WVVA has provided him with valuable resources, including more attempts at assignments and extra guidance, all while preparing him for his future in ways traditional schooling couldn’t.
This supportive atmosphere opened doors to unique experiences, including an invitation to the prestigious Governor’s School for Tourism. Dean recalls how WVVA staff encouraged him to apply, an experience that not only fueled his interest but also highlighted the staff’s commitment to helping students reach their potential. “My teachers were so supportive; they helped me with referrals and gave me the confidence to go for it,” Dean said. Being selected was a proud moment, and it encouraged Dean to pursue new challenges with enthusiasm.

At Mercer County Technical Education Center, Dean is learning the intricacies of the culinary arts, focusing specifically on baking and pastry. His journey has involved much more than just learning recipes. With guidance from skilled instructors, Dean has tackled everything from foundational pastry techniques to complex organizational skills. For instance, he discovered the importance of “mise en place”—a French term meaning “everything in its place”—as he learned to prepare ingredients ahead of time for efficient cooking. These lessons in teamwork and organization will benefit Dean, whether he chooses a career in baking or another field.
Dean’s experience underscores the holistic support WVVA provides, including building connections among students. “It’s like a regular school,” he explained. “You go to class, make friends, and have ways to connect outside of lessons.” WVVA’s inclusive atmosphere and extracurricular options—like clubs and programs that connect students to local technical centers—have allowed Dean to forge friendships and build in-person connections alongside his online community.
Reflecting on his journey, Dean is excited about the future, whether it leads him into the culinary world or elsewhere. WVVA has equipped him with more than academics—it’s given him confidence, independence, and valuable skills he can carry forward. Dean’s story is a testament to the opportunities that virtual learning can offer, enabling students to not only learn but to grow, discover new passions, and prepare for bright futures.
